Twitter came to life this week with some of the best banter and investigation work by Coleen Rooney and brands newsjacked it expertly (my favourite ASOS).
π€ Must-Reads From This Week π€
π§ I am often harsh on Facebook but when will companies learn from their mistakes? This time Twitter has overstepped.
π¨π³ No Thanks: In China, they are now enforcing facial recognition for phone numbers
π¦Iβm not a big fan of the way NPS is used in some organisations but this HBR article is a good way to think about and use NPS (Net Promoter Score)
πPirates: Friend of the newsletter Kieron, has shared his thoughts this week on Record Labels and their deals
I really feel that these labels are the modern day pirates, taking artists for everything they have and giving nothing in return.
πͺ Tasty: Buzzfeed x LG have teamed up for a Cookies subs box
π€Cultureπ€
Culture is one of the most popular themes I share, here are three must-reads or listens:
π Revolution Not Evolution: How Reddit is looking to move from the dark side of the internet to becoming Marketing Departments BBF
π (Not) By Facebook: How Instagramβs new Threads app caused a namesake app to tank in the app stores
In related news π° US public are unaware that Facebook owns WhatsApp & Instagram , π· Facebook is adding topics to groups (smart move), π₯ Instagram is working on DMβs for desktopπ΅οΈββοΈ Finally, Business Sites Are Writing About It: Google's stranglehold on search pushes companies into the dead zone
π Streaming Strategy: Why the streamers posturing will ultimately be bad for us the paying subscribers
π¨βπ«Here is a great read by industry expert Matt Ball in NYTimes on why streaming is going backwardsπ³ Meta 101: Find out the history of newsletters and why Substack (the tool I use here) thinks it can help writers and creators get paid
πOnto The Next Drop: Insightful interview on the future of reselling and drops with cofounder of StockX
βStockX has made it more accessible for people who never tried to wade through eBay or Facebook groups to buy shoes,β he adds. βThis person bought their last pair of shoes at Nike or JD sports and itβs made it easy to be able to buy it on StockX than anywhere else.β
π°Android Leader: The Facebook app has passed 5 billion (yes with a B) downloads on Android devices alone.
Two things to note, 1) Facebook has been the most popular app for many years and was pre-installed across many devices. 2) People were making in-app purchases of $399.99 - mind blown.
As ever, thanks for reading Must Reads.
β π Must-Reads By Me π β
The Business books I recommend the most & why you should read them
Growth: The Growth Commandments (read if you want to understand a proper Growth department & why it is not just another Marketing or Product team)
π§Must Listen π§ Think beyond the newsfeed
FYI: Thoughts and ponderings are my own.
